On top of fixing controllers using 3rd party drivers, have you thought of allowing 2nd (or even 3rd or 4th) player key setup in your control interface? For example: players can share the keyboard for 2 players with 1P as WASD + JK as jump and run and 2P as arrow keys + some number keys on the number pad. However, I do understand why your team is prioritizing the online play first, it makes a lot of sense.
Given the nature of this game, I do think ultimately you will need good controller support including proper controller setup interface that shows the detection of controllers and proper steam controller support because steam is your only distribution channel.

I am not nowaday's mainstream console owner (i.e. I hope the above observation can be of use to you and your development team as I believe this game is a great idea (hence I bought it anyway) and should continue to be perfection.

I've also tried using the Wii U Pro controllers - it didn't work at all, which I have a feeling they don't work with any 3rd party device, its Nintendo.

On top I've tried to use my old PS3 controllers via usb cable which gives me responses but mapping of the buttons are wrong and unplayable. using steam link: the SC acted as the primary mouse + KB (but I haven’t restarted the client constantly so it could be the same as desktop situation). Right now, after each working game, I will (roll my dices) restart the game engine until its working again. For instances where the SC is working, 1 notable issue is. To have the SC working, I just keep on restarting the game.
